Celebrating Safely – Our Guide to Xmas Functions

Guide to celebrating Xmas Safely

Our guide to an enjoyable xmas event

As December comes into view, New Zealand businesses are heading into Christmas functions that promise a well-earned celebration of the year’s achievements. These events help build team morale and recognise staff contributions, but it’s important to keep them professional and prioritise safety.

2025 has brought its share of challenges for businesses and individuals, making the urge to “let our hair down” all the more tempting. While we don’t want to take the shine off these events, we remind employers that employment law and health and safety requirements continue to apply, especially when alcohol is in the mix.

The Health and Safety at Work Act obliges employers to provide a healthy and safe environment not only at work but also at any employer-sponsored events. If you’re organising, promoting, or funding your Christmas function, it’s likely considered an extension of your workplace.  It’s a good idea to:

Set Clear Expectations

Before the festivities begin, communicate conduct guidelines and update any policies as needed. A gentle reminder of acceptable behaviour ensures everyone knows where they stand.

Appoint a Responsible Host

Select someone to oversee the event who will abstain from drinking, monitor the atmosphere, and intervene with tact if necessary. Their presence can make a world of difference.

Food and Beverage Matters

Provide non-alcoholic options and substantial food to help balance the effects of alcohol. Monitor consumption and be ready to pause service if needed.

Safe Homecomings

Encourage staff to plan their journey home or offer practical solutions—think taxi chits, Uber vouchers, or a dedicated bus.

If a complaint arises, be it about an inappropriate joke, verbal outburst, or physical interaction, respond promptly and proportionately.  Minor issues may be resolved informally, while more serious matters might require formal investigation.  When in doubt, we recommend seeking giving us a call before taking commencing any action.  With careful planning and a commitment to health and safety, your Christmas function will be a great end to the year. We wish you and your teams a joyful, safe, and truly festive celebration.
